Beg 4 Me (2024)
Acrylic on canvas36 in x 48 in
This painting was inspired by the wars that continue to permeate the world and conversations I've had and read surrounding womanhood, feminism and black women. I would ask myself, ‘What does it mean to be a woman?’ Because as I grow into one, I continue to wonder what being a woman means to me, how do I want to show up and exist as a black woman and how that may contrast with how society has taught me to view women and womanhood.
I began to think of black womanhood, sex and war; the war on the land, the war on the black woman body, the war for the black woman body and its link to sex to conceal, destroy and enhance the black woman's experience in their bodies.
I was reminded of the expectations, representations and boundaries placed on black women and how those change with every space we occupy. I was reminded of the liberation we are seeking and how frustrating these obstacles can be.
This painting marks the beginning of my discovery of womanhood; in a way that speaks to the physical, visual and spiritual manifestation of growing from a baby, to a girl, to a young lady and finally into a woman.
